Satellite Communication and Remote Control Systems for Drones and UGVs

Remote control removes the operator’s dependence on the take-off point. Commands, video and telemetry reach the aircraft over a satellite channel or a dedicated radio link, so the operator can work from a neighbouring position or from another region.

COBRA systems work with ArduPilot-based platforms: multirotors, fixed-wing aircraft and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). Control runs from the CobraQGC application — flight, camera and payload release in a single window.

When remote control is needed

Range beyond line of sight

A radio link is limited by line of sight: terrain, buildings and treelines cut the usable range. A satellite channel has no such limit.

Operator away from the danger zone

The take-off point and the operator’s position are separated. The operator is not next to the aircraft and is not exposed by the radio link.

Several aircraft and several shifts

Once there are dozens of kits, keeping track of who is on which aircraft no longer works in a chat. A web panel shows which stations and aircraft are assigned to the unit.

What is remote UAV control?

Controlling the aircraft over a network channel instead of a direct radio link. A router with a satellite terminal is installed on board and the operator works from a control application on a tablet or laptop. The distance between operator and aircraft is not limited by line of sight.

How does this differ from a remote antenna?

A remote antenna strengthens the existing radio link and works within line of sight. A remote-control system uses a network channel, so terrain, buildings and distance stop being a constraint. The two can be used in turn: the antenna boosts the radio link, the satellite removes the range limit.

Which platforms does it work with?

With ArduPilot-based platforms: multirotors, fixed-wing aircraft and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs).

Which aircraft does it not work with?

DJI aircraft, the Mavic included — a closed platform on which third-party equipment cannot be installed.

Do satellite and radio work at the same time?

One at a time. The flight controller accepts a single control source at any moment. The mode is chosen before the flight — satellite or radio. Switching in flight is a deliberate operator action.

Why is a radio link needed if there is satellite?

Radio depends on no satellite, tower or provider. It is most valuable during take-off, landing and low-altitude flight, where the satellite terminal has a poorer view of the sky.

Is internet access needed at the position?

For the satellite mode — yes, through the onboard terminal and a connection at the ground station. The radio mode works without internet.
